The Native Hawaiian Liaison (NHL) Office assists and advises U.S. Army Garrison-Hawaii (USAG-HI) leadership to interface and partner with the local and regional Native Hawaiian (NH) organizations. Its goal is to familiarize the Native Hawaiian community and the Army of each others’ culture and values through workshops, cultural events, networking opportunities and other collaborative affairs to build new and lasting partnerships in the future.
The work of the Native Hawaiian Liaison (NHL) Office developed from a covenant signed between members of the Hawaiian Community and the USAG-HI.
(Only the first page of the Covenant, with the recitals, is shown in the image below. For a complete copy of the Covenant in .pdf format, click here: NativeHawaiianCovenant.)
Today, the NHL Office works under the direction of the USAG-HI in working to fulfill the agreement set forth in the Covenant.
This activities primarily include:
- Providing opportunities for the USAG-HI community to learn about the Hawaiian culture through classes and workshops;
- Providing advise to the Garrison Commander on issues related to the Hawaiian community on the island of O‘ahu;
- Coordinating the Native Hawaiian Advisory Council.
